The Law of Influence says, “your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.”
One thing that I thought was interesting about this section of the book The Go Giver was how we measure influence.
Sam asks what would most people say make influence. Joe replies money and a few other things. Sam confirms that is exactly what people believe creates influence. And that’s exactly backwards. Influence creates those things.
I thought that was interesting because I see many people seeking after status instead of seeking to serve. The status is really a result or consequence is action, not a goal in and of itself.
For example, in the introduction, The Chairman explains that measuring success by focusing on money is like driving the super highway at 70 MPH with your eyes glued to the rear view mirror.
Influence works the same way. It isn’t created by status. “Status” is created by influence.
That makes sense to me.
When I manage government grants for non-profit organizations, we are required to submit reimbursement requests for expenses in order to receive the grant funds.
As such, the money comes in after an action is taken. Life works the same way.
Heat is created after the fire is started.
Trying to say give me heat, then I’ll give you wood is insane.
We do the same thing with goals. The actual process is “be, do, have.”
First, be the person I need to be to have what I want.
Next, do the things I need to do to have what I want.
Then, receive the things I want.
I cannot expect to have something that I didn’t “pay” for.
Everything has a cost. Usually it is time. Fortunately, we all are given the exact same amount. Therefore, any of us can in actuality have anything anyone else has…if we are willing to pay the price.
