Our Poor (Dead) Fish

Have you ever been around someone who keeps saying they’ll do something but never does it?  Or says “I should do that” when in reality they have no intention of ever doing it?

Well, I knew someone like that.  And that’s how the story of our poor (dead) fish all got started.

You see, it was a large fish tank.  Probably about 25 gallons or more.  As you can imagine, it wasn’t easy cleaning the fish tank. (Let alone cleaning by myself…)

And, like so many things that are done for the first time, there may be small, tiny little details that, if missing, can make a huge, possibly ginormous, difference in the outcome. I learned this with perfect clarity.

Yep, you probably guessed it already.  A family member kept saying that the fish tank needed to be cleaned.  Over time, it wasn’t getting done, but they kept saying it should be.

So… I did it… as a surprise to my family member.

I moved the fish to a temporary tank (like I had seen done many times).

Then, I carefully emptied all the water out of the tank one scoop at a time until it was light enough for me to lift.

After removing all the rocks and decorations, I rinsed the rocks and decorations and set them aside while I finished scrubbing the glass and washing the inside of the tank.

I even cleaned the bottom of the light before returning the fish to the tank.

Being a kid at the time, I didn’t really understand all the ins and outs of PH Balance as you can imagine.

Within a month, all but one of the fish had moved on to the next world.

So, even though my heart was wanting to help and surprise my loved family member with a new, clean fish tank, it didn’t work out the way I planned.
